    1. Muonio is surrounded by fells

    The distance to go slalom skiing, cross-country skiing or hiking to Olos, Pallas, Ylläs and Levi is quite short. Also the Pallas-Ylläs National Park is near and it is a good option for skiers and trekkers to visit.

    2. Idylllic and peaceful village

    Although tourism is the main industry in Muonio, the athmosphere is quiet and relaxed. The village is perfect for those who seeks tranqulity. In addition to that in Muonio the air is the freshest in the whole Europe.

    3. Hikers’, paddlers’, cross-country skiers’ and fishermen’s bliss

    Around Muonio there is a good variety of one day hiking treks. The rivers and streams with fish are numerous, all of them clean, of course and offer memorable experiences in the nature for paddlers and fishermen. For cross-country skiers Muonio offers one of the most longest skiing track networks in Finland and the tracks are open from the first snow in October to the end of April.

    4. Midnight sun

    Between the 26th of May and the 18th of July the sun is above the horizon for the full 24 hours in Muonio due to its northern location. Nights are very light even outside those dates from April to August. Our cottages are situated in a way which allows you to admire this midnight sun from your window and porch. In July and August the sunsets are also very beautiful and just as directly visible from the cottages.

    5. Polar twilight

    Between the 9th of December and the 2nd of January the sun doesn’t rise at all in Muonio. It is not dark though, there is still light for outdoor activities and the colours of the skyline are amazing, varying between different shades of pastel during daytime and this is reflected in the crystal white snow.

    6. Aurora Borealis

    Muonio is an ideal place for northern light watching. The best northern light season is in January, but auroras can be seen throughout the autumn and winter. Statistically the best time to see them is just before midnight. You can observe the northern lights from our yard, or by taking a short walk to the river ice, where there is less ambient light to diminish their beauty. Some of our visitors have even shared stories of admiring the auroras from their cabin windows while laying on their beds. More information and aurora probabilities

    7. Fall colours

    Autumn colours, or as we call it in Finnish, Ruska, is a phenomenon for which northern Finland is famous for. In Muonio area the fall colours start usually in the last week of August and last for three weeks, sometimes even a bit longer. The brightest colours are usually around the 10th of September. In these latitudes the deciduous trees become yellow or red and the fell-sides are covered in red by lingonberry and other brushes. Colourful and picturesque!

    8. Lots of activities available

    Whether you are interested in photograping, walking with snow shoes, snowmobiling, birdwatching or spending your time in a fire place enjoying the nature, it is possible in Muonio.

    Holiday in Muonio

    Welcome to Lomamaja Pekonen

    tervetuloa-220-1 in Muonio, North Finland. We offer accommodation in cosy and clean apartments and cottages.

    We are a small family enterprise in the heart of village Muonio in northern Finland or as we call it, Lapland. We are located by the lake Muoniojärvi.

    In summer you can enjoy the beach which is across the road. From there you can easily go fishing to river Jeris or Muonio river. In winter the cross-country ski tracks start from our yard. The distances to the closest ski resorts: Olos 6 km, Pallas 30 km, Levi 60 km and Ylläs 60 km.

    Welcome to Lomamaja Pekonen to fish, hike, ski, or just to relax and enjoy the peace and nature.

    We also have caravan places, fishing licences to the lakes and rivers near by.

    caravaanari-iltamaisema-1For trailers and caravans we have places with electricity available in our beautiful premises with fine views. In the communal building there are clean toilets and showers and two saunas. In summer you can enjoy our beach which is across the road and go for swimming, canoeing or fishing from there. Our guests may use the log hut in our premises with a fireplace and possibility to barbeque.
